Former Minister and leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hon.Mavis Hawa Koomson, has declared that the party needs an experienced and competent person to lead its women’s wing—and believes she is the right person for the job.
According to her, the position of Women’s Organiser requires someone with the requisite experience, competence, organisational skills and understanding of the party’s grassroots structures to effectively mobilise women and strengthen their participation in the NPP.
Speaking about her ambition, she said, “The NPP needs someone who is experienced and competent to be Women’s Organiser, and it’s me.”
Hon. Koomson said her experience in party politics and public service has equipped her with the leadership skills necessary to mobilise women across the country and contribute meaningfully to the party’s organisational development.
She expressed that a change for female candidates in any of the positions such as chairpersons, vice chairs, organizers and others to cast poll on women organizer position of the party was proposed by herself and it was adopted in the laws governing the New Patriotic Party's electoral system.
She is expected to focus on strengthening the women’s structures at the grassroots, empowering women members, promoting greater participation of women in party activities and helping to build a stronger and more united NPP.
Her declaration adds to the ongoing conversations within the party over the leadership of its women’s wing, as the NPP continues to reposition itself and prepare for future political contests.
Supporters of Hon. Koomson believe her experience and longstanding involvement in the party make her a strong contender for the position.
The eventual choice of Women’s Organiser will be closely watched, particularly given the important role women play in the party’s grassroots mobilisation and electoral campaigns.
