Football development requires investment beyond players – Carlos Queiroz

Black Stars Head Coach Carlos Queiroz has called for greater investment in football infrastructure, player development and support systems as Ghana seeks to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level.

The Portuguese coach said success in modern football cannot depend solely on the quality of players or the appointment of a coach, arguing that several supporting factors must work together to produce results.

Addressing the press on Monday, September 21, he identified player development, youth education, facilities, infrastructure, logistics and medical support as key areas requiring attention.

“For one national team or one club to progress, you cannot put your resources only in one basket, in players or a coach,” Queiroz said.

He stressed the importance of providing players with proper training and recovery conditions, including quality pitches, facilities and medical systems that can help them recover quickly from injuries.

Queiroz used an analogy involving world-class musicians to illustrate the importance of infrastructure and facilities to performance.

“If you have the best pianists in the world and you bring them here to make a concert, and the pianos are not good, you expect that they can perform? They cannot perform,” he said.

According to the coach, the increasing competitiveness of international football means Ghana must invest across different areas of the game rather than rely on individual talent.

He said preparation, logistics, rest, training conditions, football pitches and other infrastructure could ultimately determine whether a national team is able to translate its talent into success.
