Ekon Chief Appeals for Cemetery as Community Faces Burial Land Challenges

The Chief of Ekon Okusubentsir, Nana Kwame Edu Ababio II, has appealed to the government and relevant authorities to provide a lasting solution to the cemetery challenge confronting residents of Ekon, a suburb of the Cape Coast Traditional Area in the Central Region.

‎Nana Kwame Edu Ababio II said the community had made portions of its land available for government development projects, but currently lacks adequate land for cemetery purposes.
‎
‎He therefore called on the authorities to consider the plight of residents and help secure a suitable portion of land to address the burial needs of the community.
‎
‎The Chief also appealed for a lasting solution to the water crisis in Ekon.
‎
‎He explained that the current water challenge was not necessarily a long-standing problem but had been aggravated by some ongoing development projects in the community.
‎
‎Nana Kwame Edu Ababio II made the appeal at the celebration of the Apayem Festival at Ekon, held under the theme “Unity and Youth Development for the Progress of the Community.”
‎
‎The event was attended by the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, Hon. George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, who advised against attacks on government projects during their execution.
‎
‎According to him, all 275 Members of Parliament are under pressure from their constituents to deliver development projects, making cooperation between communities and contractors important for successful project implementation.
‎
‎He cited the community's earlier reaction to the construction of a sea defence project, where residents demanded that a breakwater be constructed alongside the sea defence.
‎
‎The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive, Hon. George Justice Arthur, also highlighted the ongoing construction of the government's flagship 24-hour modern economy market project in the community.
‎
‎He said the project forms part of efforts to improve economic activity and create opportunities for residents.
‎
‎The stakeholders consequently called for greater collaboration among traditional authorities, residents and government agencies to ensure that development projects in Ekon meet the needs and aspirations of the community.
