University administrators lay down tools over salary disparities

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has declared an indefinite strike effective Monday, August 10, 2026.

They citing concerns over wages, salaries and what it describes as unfair remuneration for university administrators.

The GAUA announced the industrial action during the Association’s Annual Congress held Abesim, near Sunyani on Friday.

Rev. Kwaku Amoah Karikari, the National President of the GAUA accused the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission of failing to address the concerns of university administrators.

He said that the growing disparity between the salaries of academic staff and university administrators has created frustration among members of the association.

The Registrar of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Dr. (Mrs.) Asi Owusu, who chaired the event, expressed her support for the strike action.

She said there is a significant disparity between the salaries of lecturers and university administrators, arguing that the situation requires urgent attention.

Dr Owusu cited that salary figures to illustrate the disparity. According to her, a professor earns about GH¢12,537, while a university registrar receives approximately GH¢6,168.

She further stated that an assistant lecturer earns about GH¢7,837, compared to a junior assistant registrar who receives approximately GH¢3,051.
