Love Your Eyes'' : Stop Using Local Remedies, Seek Professional Eye Care-Suame Ophthalmic Nurse Warns Ahead World Eye Day
The Suame Municipal Health Directorate has announced a comprehensive free eye screening exercise scheduled for Thursday, 8th October, 2026, at Kronum-Aboahia as part of this year's World Sight Day celebrations.
The exercise is part of global efforts to combat preventable blindness and to encourage regular eye checks among citizens suffering from various eye diseases and infections.
This year's celebration is being held under the global theme: "Love Your Eyes" a theme that calls on individuals to prioritize their eye health.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sompa News, the Suame Municipal Ophthalmic Nurse, Dr. Serwaa Acheampong, shed more light on the significance of this year's theme.
According to her, the eye is the most vital organ of the body, and its importance cannot be overemphasized.
"The reason for this year's theme, 'Love Your Eyes' is simple the eye is your whole world. You are able to walk, work, read and live meaningfully on this earth because of your eyes. If you love yourself, you must love your eyes," Dr. Acheampong explained.
She used the opportunity to issue a strong caution to parents and individuals who resort to herbal and local concoctions for eye problems. She warned that such practices often worsen the condition and can lead to permanent blindness.
She advised that instead of putting local remedies in the eyes, people should make it a habit to regularly visit the hospital for professional eye care and early treatment.
"Do not wait until you cannot see before you see a doctor. Regular eye screening can save your sight," she added.
She further revealed that during the screening, residents will be checked for conditions such as cataract, glaucoma, refractive errors, and other infections, with free medications and referrals for severe cases.
In a related development, the Suame Municipal Nutrition Officer, Abigail Afia Minkah, emphasized the link between good nutrition and good eyesight. She noted that this year's World Sight Day should be all-inclusive.
"The eye is the lamp of the body. What you eat affects what you see. Eating foods rich in Vitamin A, like carrots, leafy greens, eggs and fish, helps to protect your eyes," she said.
She therefore called on all citizens, especially the aged, children, traders, and artisans who have been experiencing blurred vision, itching, and other eye challenges, to take advantage of this year's World Sight Day to get their eyes screened for free.
The highly anticipated program will be held at the Kronum-Aboahia Primary School in the Suame Municipal Assembly, Ashanti Region, starting at 8:00 AM
