Cape Coast Mayor Warns PWD Beneficiaries Against Selling Empowerment Packages, Threatens Legal Action

The Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. George Justice Arthur, has cautioned beneficiaries of empowerment packages for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) against selling the items provided to them, warning that failure to use the packages for their intended purposes could attract legal action.

He said the support was designed to promote economic independence, improve livelihoods and empower beneficiaries to engage in productive activities that would enhance their living conditions.

Hon. George Justice Arthur gave the warning during the distribution of various empowerment packages and support services to Persons with Disabilities in the Cape Coast Metropolis.

The items distributed included two cassava-processing machines, one car-washing machine, 40 deep freezers, three electric sewing machines, four fufu-processing machines, one industrial sewing machine, three knitting machines, one pepper-milling machine, one corn-milling machine, one overlock machine and one motor for a flour-milling machine.

A total of 58 beneficiaries received the equipment to support their businesses and livelihoods.

The broader intervention also covered economic empowerment, educational and training support, medical assistive devices, and assistance for parents and caregivers of Persons with Disabilities.

In all, 208 beneficiaries, comprising 108 males and 100 females, benefited from the intervention, including the 58 people who received the various machines and equipment.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Director of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Okine Mustapha Aryee, expressed appreciation to the government for its continued support through the allocation of funds from the District Assemblies Common Fund for Persons with Disabilities.

He noted that the regular release of funds had helped the metropolis provide assistance to persons facing various challenges, including speech and hearing impairments, visual impairments, multiple disabilities, albinism and mental health conditions.

Mr. Aryee emphasised the importance of sustained government support in addressing the needs of Persons with Disabilities and improving their access to essential services and economic opportunities.
