Sunyani East Communications Officer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gideon Cheremeh Amoah, has stated that the party’s supporters in Sunyani staged a demonstration on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, to protest what they describe as worsening governance, unfulfilled promises, and limitations on freedom of expression under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Speaking on ‘Ghana Nkomo’, a Thursday socio-political show hosted by Akua Nyarko Abronoma at Sompa FM-Sunyani, Mr. Amoah said the protest was driven by a sense of equal citizenship and the need for fairness in governance.
“The NDC government is not more Ghanaian than we the NPP members. We all have blood and water running through our veins. They eat, we also eat. They sleep, we also sleep,” he stated.
According to him, the demonstrators were demanding respect for democratic principles, particularly the right to freely express their views without intimidation.
“We just want them to recognize the rules of democracy and leave us to express ourselves freely,” Amoah added.
He clarified that while concerns over the release of an individual identified as Baba Amando and issues of free speech formed part of the protest, the demonstration also sought to highlight broader national concerns, especially those affecting key sectors.
Mr. Amoah noted that cocoa farmers remain dissatisfied with what he described as unfulfilled commitments made by the government, adding that the protest was also meant to remind government of those pledges.
He further criticized the administration of President John Dramani Mahama over what he claimed were delays in job placements for trained nurses and teachers.
“President Mahama spoke about offering job opportunities to nurses and teachers, but as we speak now, they have not posted even one person. Some of them have not been paid for months,” he alleged.
He stressed that the demonstration was a call for accountability and a reminder to the government to deliver on its promises to Ghanaians.
The protest in Sunyani adds to a series of political activities across the country as citizens and party supporters continue to engage government on policy delivery and governance issues.
