Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has declared that the "real World Cup starts now" as his side prepare for Saturday's Round of 32 clash against Colombia at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Portuguese tactician, who took over from Otto Addo in April 2026, is no stranger to high-pressure knockout football and says his experience will be vital as Ghana aim to reach the Round of 16 for the first time since 2010.
"I'm fully ready. I have been in this situation [knockout football] a couple of times," Queiroz said.
"The real World Cup starts now. These are the games that count and matter."
Queiroz has managed at four World Cups with three different nations – Portugal (2010), Iran (2014, 2018) and Egypt (2022). His vast experience in knockout tournaments is seen as a major asset for a Ghana side that has not advanced past the group stage since their quarter-final run 16 years ago.
The 73-year-old has already made his mark on the squad, instilling defensive discipline and tactical flexibility. Ghana conceded just two goals in their three group matches – a record that bodes well for knockout football.
Ghana face a formidable Colombia side that topped Group K, unbeaten. The South Americans boast a wealth of attacking talent and will pose a stern test for Queiroz's defence.
But the Ghana coach is unfazed. His message to his players is clear: group stage results are forgotten now. Only 90 minutes – or more – stand between them and history.
Kick-off is scheduled for 01:30 GMT on Saturday, July 4.
