Police arrest suspect in GH¢1.1m fake gold scam in Berekum

The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man, Gyamfi Christian, in connection with a suspected fake gold syndicate operating in the Berekum Municipality.

‎The arrest follows a complaint by 29-year-old gold aggregator Christopher Awuni, who told police that four men posing as gold sellers sold to him 110 troy ounces of gold for GH¢1.1 million in July 2026.

‎The gold was subsequently found to be fake and has been retained by the Police as an exhibit.

‎Police say intelligence-led investigations led to the arrest of suspect Gyamfi at his hideout in Wamfie in the Dormaa East District on August 17.

‎In a statement signed and made available to Sompa FM in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, says the suspect admitted involvement in the transaction and disclosed that the deal took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.

‎“During interrogation, he admitted involvement in the transaction and disclosed that it took place at Drobo in the Jaman South Municipality.”

‎The suspect allegedly identified three accomplices: Abraham, alias Frenchman, said to be the leader of the group, Isaac Antwi and Balthazar, who are currently at large.

‎Preliminary investigations have also established that the group allegedly defrauded another victim of GH¢1.4 million in Drobo earlier this year.

‎The regional Police Command is therefore urging the public to exercise caution when engaging in gold transactions and report suspicious activities.

‎Meanwhile, Gyamfi Christian remains in Police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.

‎The Police are also appealing to members of the public with information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects at large to come forward.
