C/R: Teacher Unions Back Continued Nationwide Strike Amid Suspension Rumors

Teacher unions in the Central Region have thrown their unflinching support behind the continuation of the nationwide strike action by teacher unions amid earlier suspension rumors, citing concerns over poor conditions of service and other outstanding challenges affecting teachers.

The Central Regional Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr. Ajono Martin Adonis, made this known at a press conference organized by GNAT, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG).

The press conference was held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Central Regional GNAT Hall in Cape Coast.

Mr. Ajono Martin Adonis said the conditions of service for Ghana Education Service staff expired in June this year, but expressed concern that issues affecting teachers continue to receive inadequate attention.

He called on the government to automatically place newly promoted teachers on the appropriate salary scale.

According to him, some teachers who sat for the promotion aptitude test in December last year and February this year are yet to be captured for their promotions.

Mr. Adonis further indicated that since 2024, government had agreed to a 20 percent salary increment for teachers serving in remote and deprived areas, but said the increment has still not been implemented.

He therefore appealed to government to intervene in the outstanding issues between the teacher unions and the relevant government agencies to bring an end to the challenges.

The Central Regional GNAT Secretary also called on the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to reconsider its position requiring teachers due for promotion to produce hard copies of their promotional letters and input forms before their promotions can be effected on the payroll.

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Chairman of PRETAG, Mr. Eric Kow Asante, assured members that the respective unions remain firm behind the strike action.

He said they would not heed any call to suspend the strike until the concerns raised by the teacher unions are satisfactorily addressed.
