Mr Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East says that the detention of Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, the MP for Asante Akyem North, abroad is a clear indication that the Netherlands has no confidence in the Ghana security.
“The Netherlands might think that allowing the security in Ghana to probe the MP will have any meaningful outcome”, Mr Cheremeh, a legal practitioner stated when commenting on the arrest and detention of the MP.
The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on May 10, 2026.
His detention is reportedly linked to a coordinated international investigation involving the FBI over alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and romance scams worth an estimated US$32 million.
Speaking to Kwasi Kyei Baffour, host of the "Me Man Nti socio-political show on a Sunyani-based Sompa FM, the former legislator said that “our laws don’t protect you anytime you move outside the Ghana borders”.
Commenting on the issue on the same show, Mr Ali Dayinday, the Bono Regional Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) expressed concern about the monetization of Ghana’s elections, worrying that the monetization eaten into the General Election was affecting the quality of the legislature.
