Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North Hon Collins Adomako Mensah has called on the government to explain the GH¢1 energy sector levy on fuel in 2025, aiming to address the country's energy crisis and debt, projected to generate GH¢5.7 billion annually.
On behalf of the minority caucus, he said there's been a lack of transparency and accountability regarding the levy's collection and usage, with no report presented to parliament.
The Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Finance have faced criticism for their silence on the matter. The energy sector debt stands at $3.1 billion, with $500 million owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and $200 million to fuel suppliers.
The Minority Caucus therefore called on the government to provide a detailed, independently verified report on the levy, including collections, disbursements, and outcomes.
They're also filing a Right to Information (RTI) request to shed light on the energy sector levy.
Hon Adomako further mentioned that the current energy crisis in Ghana is being blamed on the government's incompetence and lack of transparency.
The opposition is criticizing the government's response, saying it's just a public relations exercise rather than a genuine effort to solve the problem.
They the minority are pointing fingers at the NDC government for abandoning the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP) and failing to clear Independent Power Producer (IPP) obligations he noted
Also, the opposition is pushing for full parliamentary scrutiny of the energy crisis and accountability from the government.
