Pressure is mounting on the government of President John Dramani Mahama to pass the controversial Anti-LGBTQI Bill, as the Minority in Parliament renews its push for swift legislative action.
During parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the Minority expressed their determination to compel the government to pass the bill, vowing to apply the same pressure that was once used against the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
“You forced LGBTQI down the throat of the Akufo-Addo government. Today, you don’t want LGBTQI. You will want it. Mo bepe paa,” the Minority Leader declared on the floor of Parliament.
The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon, drew attention to the bill, noting that although it had appeared on the Order Paper for Tuesday, it was conspicuously missing on Wednesday.
Backed by his colleagues, Hon. Iddrisu urged the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, MP for Akatsi South, who was presiding at the time, to direct that an Order Paper Addendum be issued to include the anti-LGBTQI bill.
The Deputy Speaker attempted to clarify the issue, citing administrative errors that had led to the omission. He explained that the Clerk of Parliament had acknowledged the mistake, adding that certain procedural steps required for admitting a Private Member’s Bill had not been properly followed—hence the decision to exclude the item from the Order Paper.
However, the Minority remained unconvinced, expressing suspicion that there were deliberate efforts to delay or frustrate the laying of the bill.
