Ghanaians, particularly the youth, have been encouraged to prioritise available opportunities within the country instead of embarking on risky irregular migration journeys in search of greener pastures abroad.
The call was made after a four-day migration training for selected media personnel from the Northern, Central, Bono, and Volta Regions by the Song-ba Empowerment Centre in partnership with Rog Agency, through its implementation of the Migrant Media Action plan at Sunyani in the Bono Region from 29th June to 2nd July, 2026.
The training aimed at educating the public on the dangers associated with irregular migration, human trafficking, and deceptive overseas recruitment schemes to control irregular migration and encourage the youth to consider opportunities in the country.
Mrs. Rhoda Wedam, Executive Director of Song-ba Empowerment Centre, speaking at the capacity-building workshop indicated that many young people in Ghana embark on journeys to abroad because they are unaware of, or do not believe in the opportunities available at home.
She stressed on the need for the media to give more emphasis to migration issues. Noting that good reporting can shape public perception and influence decision-making among young people.
“If we want to minimize irregular migration, then we must first prioritize and promote the opportunities in Ghana. The opportunity are there, but you must start something,” she stated.
Participants at the workshop said the training was encouraging and insightful. Many noted the opportunity to learn more about the importance of choice of words when reporting on migration to avoid sensationalism and stigma.
They added that the session equipped them to report more on skills training and reintegration programs for youth.
