The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for increased financial support for the National House of Chiefs to strengthen its role in regulating the institution of chieftaincy in Ghana.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II made the appeal when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture and Religious Affairs paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace to officially introduce the committee and outline its mandate following its establishment in the 8th Parliament.
According to a post sighted on the official Facebook page of the Parliament of Ghana, the Asantehene welcomed the creation of the committee, describing it as a positive step toward addressing issues relating to chieftaincy and religious affairs in the country.
He also extended his greetings to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
Touching on the increasing number of chieftaincy disputes in some parts of the country, the Asantehene stressed the need for chiefs to uphold truth and fairness in the discharge of their responsibilities.
According to him, truth remains essential for understanding and peaceful coexistence, warning that the absence of peace could negatively affect development in communities.
Chairman of the committee, Fred Kyei Asamoah, also commended the Asantehene for his wisdom and efforts in resolving longstanding chieftaincy disputes to promote peace and development.
Dr. Asamoah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Offinso North, further congratulated Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on his 27th anniversary on the Golden Stool.
Members of the committee later toured the Manhyia Palace Museum to learn more about the history, culture and art of the Asante Kingdom.
