The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Baffour Awuah, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over his position suggesting that the proposed LGBTQ+ bill is not a current priority for his administration.
His comments follow remarks by the President on March 30, 2026, during a dialogue with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), where he said the LGBTQ+ bill is not a priority, a stance Baffour Awuah has questioned as a shift by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking in a telephone interview with Ama Konadu on ‘Adea Akye Abia’ morning show at Sompa Fm-Sunyani, Mr. Awuah said members of the NDC previously mounted significant pressure on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to assent to the bill, making it a key issue at the time.
“When the NDC was in opposition, they mounted pressure on the former President to sign the bill into law. Today, they say it is no longer a priority,” he stated.
The Manhyia South MP further accused the NDC of failing to deliver on a significant portion of its campaign promises since assuming office.
He cited the delayed passage of the LGBTQ+ bill, efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey), and the implementation of a 24-hour economy policy as examples of unmet commitments.
According to him, the NDC’s campaign messaging was largely aimed at gaining political power rather than reflecting genuine policy intent.
“They only wanted power so badly and portrayed the NPP negatively to win public support,” he alleged.
Mr. Awuah emphasized that the Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will continue to push for the passage of the LGBTQ+ bill, insisting it reflects the will of many Ghanaians.
