The Mayor of Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur has called for stronger collaboration between the Government of Ghana, local stakeholders and indigenes in the implementation of the metropolis’ proposed eight-year development plan, aimed at accelerating infrastructure growth and socio-economic transformation.
Speaking in an interview to Sompa TV's Eric Annan after a forum and fundraising event held on Wednesday, 11th March, 2026, at the Lancaster Hotel in Accra on the long-term development agenda, the Mayor stressed that meaningful progress in the city can only be achieved through collective participation, transparency and accountability in the use of public resources.
According to him, the development blueprint is designed to guide the transformation of Cape Coast over the next eight years, focusing on critical sectors such as sanitation, tourism development, recreation, education, infrastructure, job creation and environmental sustainability.
Hon. George Justice Arthur urged Cape Coast indigenes both at home and in the diaspora to actively contribute ideas, expertise and investment towards the implementation of the development agenda.
He emphasized that the city possesses enormous cultural and economic potential that can only be harnessed through inclusive planning and citizen participation.
He further noted that the involvement of traditional authorities, civil society organisations and community groups would help ensure that the development plan reflects the real needs and aspirations of residents.
Addressing concerns about the management of funds, the Mayor assured stakeholders that the Assembly would put in place strong accountability and monitoring mechanisms to ensure transparency in the execution of projects proposed under the eight-year development plan.
Having assured of a dedicated land site for all proposed projects under the development plan, the Mayor disclosed that the forum garnered a fundraising of GH¢319,000 which he noted will be channelled to the appropriate projects. Adding that financial resources allocated for the development initiative will be subject to strict oversight, proper auditing and periodic public reporting, to build confidence among residents and development partners.
Madam Charlotte Osei, a Lawyer and former Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson speaking at the event underscored that in as much as Cape Coast is truly the mother city of Ghana, it is time that the ancient capital moves beyond what it have as a leveraging ladder to get to where it anticipate to be.
She noted that Cape Coast unlike other cities, possesses a lot of natural resources, monuments and events which numbers over 60 like the ocean, lagoons, together with numerous outstanding educational institutions which creates eternal bond with its learners, thus gives Cape Coast the ability to attract significant human capital to help develop the city.
Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, Hon. Kwamena Mintah Nyarku having left his busy schedules to join the forum, charged leadership of Cape Coast to be innovative and intentional enough towards the development of the city.
He added that amid all the projects the eight-year development plan seeks to address, unemployment and jobs for the youth still stands as the pivotal issue affecting Cape Caost, hence the need for leadership to refine its thinking towards that end. In view of that, the MP uncovered that through his able stewardship, businesses like a charcoal factory, shoe, gari and coconut factories are all lined up to be establish soon.
