Traders at Pakyi No. 2 in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region have raised serious concerns about the deplorable state of their market, describing the situation as devastating and harmful to their daily businesses.
According to the traders, the poor condition of the Pakyi No. 2 market has persisted for several years and continues to affect trading activities, especially during major market days. They explained that the situation has been a burden on them throughout every market cycle, with no meaningful improvement in sight.
Pakyi No. 2 observes its main market day every Thursday but everyday the market is busy, a day that attracts buyers and sellers from surrounding communities including Santasi, Anwia-Nkwata, Trede, and other nearby areas. However, traders say the bad nature of the market environment discourages business and affects patronage.
They lamented that during the rainy season, trading becomes extremely difficult as the market floods and goods get damaged. In the dry season, excessive dust fills the air, causing discomfort and health challenges for both traders and customers.
Speaking in an interview with Sompa FM Bawah Baidoo during a visit by the news team to the market, the traders passionately appealed to the government and relevant authorities to come to their aid by rebuilding a modern market facility for them.
Meanwhile, the Akwamuhene of Pakyi No. 2 Nana Yaw Boakye also expressed concern over the situation. He revealed that, Government plans to construct a 24-hour market in the community to boost economic activities. However, he alleged that the Manso Nkwanta District Assembly intends to relocate the proposed market to a different community.
The traditional leader described the move as unfair, deceptive, and disrespectful to the people of Pakyi No. 2, insisting that the market rightly belongs to the community and should be developed where it currently exists.
Residents and traders are therefore calling on the government, the district assembly, and all relevant stakeholders to intervene urgently and address their concerns to improve livelihoods and promote local economic growth.
