Lecturer at the Department of Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Francis Kumi has implored the government to turn an eye on local agricultural technology developers in the country.
He highlighted that Ghana in its pursuit to agricultural enhancement, can boost of local agric-technology developers who are into agric machines manufacturing, mobile apps, censers, among others but currently operates in small-scale but poses the potential of becoming big to the advantage of the country's agric sector.
Speaking in a press engagement with Sompa TV's Eric Annan, the UCC Lecturer admonished that as the country annually recognizes the effort of its farmers, it needs to equally motivate its agric-technology developers by honouring them during such occasions.
He stressed that when the efforts of such individuals are recognized, it gives the country the advantage to find lasting solution to its confronted agricultural issues.
Dr. Francis Kumi further bemoaned the fact Ghana now rarely produces home made cutlasses but imports most of its cutlasses used by farmers, since its now difficult to see blacksmith who were very common then, but has all faded off all because they were lightly esteemed in their contribution to the agric industry during occasions of honour like the farmers day.
He argued that the country has overlooked its local agri-tech innovators for far too long, yet they emerge crucial to Ghana's agricultural growth.
Adding that should Ghana recognize its agricultural technology innovators well enough, be it individuals or local companies that are making strives to ensure that agriculture in the country is modernized, Ghana will stand to recoup immensely should his suggestion be considered, particularly at a point where post-harvest loses is on the rise.
He noted that the country's agri-tech innovators can find a way of solving such issues locally using the aforementioned technologies and even more to tackle these agric problems farmers in the country have been battling.
