The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has categorically denied reports suggesting the government's intention to repurpose the stalled National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Centre.
In an interview with the media, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu described the reports as entirely inaccurate and misleading, emphasizing that no such decision has been made by the government.
He clarified that the government has not considered converting the site into a cultural convention center as part of its 24-hour economy initiative, dubbed 'SH0W24', which focuses on the culture, creative arts, and tourism sectors.
According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, a continental body currently renting space in Accra approached the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat with an unsolicited proposal to establish its headquarters on the National Cathedral site, which would include constructing a cultural and convention center for Ghana.
However, he stressed that this proposal has neither been accepted nor considered by the government, and no decisions have been made regarding its potential implementation.
The Minister also reiterated President John Dramani Mahama's stance on the National Cathedral project, stating unequivocally that no public funds will be allocated towards its construction.
"As long as President Mahama remains in office, he is resolute in his decision not to utilize taxpayers' money for this project," Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized.
He assured Ghanaians that the government will determine the future of the site after conducting a thorough forensic audit, ensuring transparency and accountability in the decision-making process.
The fate of the site will be decided once we have all the facts, but one thing is certain – no public funds will be invested in the cathedral.
