The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has refuted claims by environmental group A Rocha Ghana concerning the felling of trees within the Commission’s premises, describing the allegations as “misleading.”
In an interview with Sompa FM’s Hotbit News, the Director for Commercialisation and Communication at GAEC, Anthony Nana Boateng, clarified that the tree felling was done with full approval from the appropriate authorities and was carried out in the interest of public safety.
He explained that the Commission secured clearance from the Forestry Commission to fell eight mahogany trees and six Leucaena trees. According to him, these trees posed a danger to motorists and high-tension electricity cables along the stretch of the Atomic–Kwabenya road.
“A Rocha’s claims are misleading,” he said. “We followed all the necessary procedures, and the trees were removed only after obtaining the required approval. This was done to prevent accidents and infrastructure damage.”
A Rocha Ghana had earlier raised concerns about what it described as indiscriminate tree felling by GAEC, warning of potential environmental and ecological impacts.
However, Mr. Boateng stressed that GAEC remains committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. He also reiterated the Commission’s openness to engagement with civil society and environmental advocacy groups.
“We are not against environmental protection. In fact, our operations are guided by it. But it’s important that the facts are checked and understood in the right context,” he added.
GAEC urged the public and stakeholders to seek accurate information and assured that all its activities are conducted in line with national regulations and safety standards.
