The National Communications Authority held a commemorative event to mark the 2026 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, bringing together stakeholders in the communications and media industry to discuss digital resilience, media sustainability, and the future of technology-driven development.
Speaking at the event, Board Chairperson of the NCA, Ms. Mavis A. Ampah, emphasized the importance of building resilient digital infrastructure capable of supporting communities during crises and ensuring inclusive connectivity for all.
She noted that resilience must be embedded into digital systems through international standards, capacity building, and global cooperation, adding that collective efforts are needed to build a safer and more reliable digital future.
Meanwhile, Professor Amin Alhassan, director of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, has also raised concerns over the future of Ghana’s media industry.
According to Professor Amin Alhassan , the media landscape must not be left to political cycles alone, as the industry currently experiences heavy economic influence from political activities every four to eight years.
Professor Amin stressed that this trend limits consistency, professionalism, and long-term growth within the media sector.
He called for the creation of a stronger and more balanced media ecosystem that prioritizes quality journalism, professional training, and uniform industry standards.
Professor Alhassan also highlighted the poor working conditions facing many media professionals, especially those in smaller and unregulated media outlets, where job insecurity and lack of pension contributions remain major concerns.
He further urged regulatory bodies to enforce fairness, accountability, and transparency to help build a sustainable media industry that truly serves the public interest.
And that’s the latest from the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day celebration.
The event also highlighted concerns about the future of Ghana’s media industry, with calls for improved professionalism, better working conditions for media practitioners, and stronger regulatory enforcement to ensure accountability and sustainability within the sector.
