Etiquette specialist Mellisa Abbey Quaye has sparked an important conversation on Sompa Delight entertainment show on Sompa 106.5FM in Accra after outlining key dining and social etiquette rules that many people often overlook.
Speaking in an engaging interview with host Abena Ruthy, she emphasized that personal conduct in public spaces reflects one’s level of respect — both for oneself and for others.
No Bags on the Floor
One of her strongest cautions was against placing bags on the floor. According to Mellisa Abbey Quaye, bags should rather be: Placed on your lap, Positioned behind you on your chair
She explained that placing bags on the floor is not only unhygienic but also considered poor etiquette in formal and social settings.
Washroom Etiquette Matters
She further advised that before settling in at any venue, individuals should: First ask where the washroom is; Visit the washroom before making any requests.
When excusing yourself, she stressed that one should simply say “excuse me”, instead of announcing your destination.
Phones Off the Table
Touching on modern habits, the etiquette expert cautioned against the use of phones at the dining table. Phones should be kept on silent mode
They should be kept away from the table, "avoid using phones while eating", she stressed.
She noted that constant phone use during meals shows a lack of attention and respect for others present.
Proper Use of Napkins
Mellisa Abbey Quaye also highlighted correct napkin etiquette, saying, "Do not open your napkin on the table, slightly move to the side before unfolding it, place it neatly on your lap, never tie it around your neck."
She added that when stepping away briefly, the napkin should be placed on your seat to indicate you will return. However, placing it on the table signals that you are done eating.
Respect at the Table
She concluded by stressing that consideration for others is the foundation of etiquette and urged people not start eating until everyone has been served, adding, "always act in a way that makes others feel comfortable,"
