The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has moved to calm public concerns after a viral video showed visiting Black American tourists alleging they were kidnapped and extorted by men purported to be police officers.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (9 December), the Authority’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Bright Asempa Tsadidey, said the GTA issued its statement to prevent panic and protect Ghana’s reputation at the peak of the December in GH tourism season.
“A video like this can scare visitors. Even if it were true, the impact on perception is immediate. December in GH is a global brand — we cannot allow negative publicity to go unaddressed,” he explained.
Tsadidey confirmed that the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations and assured that updates will be communicated once the process advances.
“They have already begun their investigations and assured us that they will fast-track the process. We can only communicate the details after a full report is ready.”
He also disclosed that the GTA is meeting the US Embassy regarding the matter.
Security Measures for December in GH
Highlighting preparations for the festive season, he noted that GTA leadership held meetings with the Inspector General of Police and the entire police command to ensure event-by-event security planning.
“The IGP has assured adequate security for every event on the December in GH calendar. Some officers will be in uniform, others not — but security is covered.”
Tsadidey confirmed over 100 events are officially listed this year, including:
Concerns About Reputational Damage
The GTA says it is “deeply concerned” about how such videos might impact Ghana’s image but insisted Ghana remains safe.
“We are not leaving any stone unturned. Ghana is one of the safest destinations on the continent. Visitors should feel free to enjoy the country.”
He urged tourists to contact the police on emergency hotline 18555 if they encounter difficulties.
Tsadidey said the GTA maintains open channels with embassies and global travel partners to manage reputational risks.
“We have very cordial relationships with embassies in Ghana. We will continue to engage them to assure visitors that Ghana remains secure.”
