The Ministry of Transport has introduced additional buses on key Accra routes as part of emergency measures to ease evening transport challenges.
The deployment takes effect today, Wednesday, 10 December.
According to the Ministry, four major corridors — Madina–Adenta, Achimota–Amasaman, Mallam–Kasoa, and the Tema Beach Road stretch — will each receive at least eight buses during the evening rush between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari briefed journalists on the initiative, saying the move is to provide safe and reliable options for thousands of workers returning home.
“We are going to deploy some buses commencing from today, 10th December, and we will ensure that those buses are available at the peak hours to support our commuters who have closed from work to get home safely. And the Ministry of Transport is doing this in collaboration with the intercity STC,” he said.
Bukari stated that the Ministry is leveraging STC buses that are available after completing longer trips.
“We are ensuring that we mop up all those vehicles and ensure that they are on our routes. So for now, we have identified four major corridors that we are going to deploy a minimum of eight buses to each of the corridors,” he explained.
He listed the operational periods for each route, stressing that the measure is short-term but necessary.
“And those corridors are the Accra-Madina-Adenta corridor… We also have Accra Achimota-Amasaman… We also have the Accra-Mallam-Kasoa route… And the last route we have identified is the Accra-Tema-Beach route.”
Bukari said the initiative is “an interim or emergency deployment of buses to help salvage the situation.”
The Minister also cautioned commercial drivers who operate outside recognised unions, accusing them of taking advantage of commuters during peak periods.
“We want them to support us, to be able to flush out all drivers who would not want to respect the laws of the country… we want to tell all our commuters to remain calm and assist the government,” he said.
He warned that enforcement will soon begin, “We are going to embark on a serious exercise to flush out any commercial driver that does not belong to a union… You either belong to a union, or you have no business on our roads.”
