President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater consistency and transparency in the disclosure of spending on sporting activities, stressing the need for accountability in the management of public funds.
The President made the appeal during a fundraising event held on Friday, March 20, at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, as the Black Stars intensify preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His comments come on the back of concerns raised by Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), who recently criticised what he described as excessive scrutiny of the team’s budget.
Addressing stakeholders at the event, President Mahama underscored the importance of openness in financial matters, noting that Ghanaians deserve clarity on how national resources are spent.
“Ghanaians have the right to know how their resources are being utilised, and corporate partners deserve transparency before they will agree to invest," he said.
He further commended Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, while urging authorities to sustain and improve the standard of financial reporting in the sector.
“I commend the Minister for Sports and Recreation to maintain this standard, but we need to be more consistent in releasing information about how much we spend as a country on our sporting activities," he added.
The event was attended by key government officials, including Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem.
On the pitch, Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside England, Panama, and Croatia.
As part of their build-up to the tournament, the Black Stars are scheduled to play international friendlies against Austria and Germany this week. The Mundial will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
