The National Democratic Congress (NDC) marked its 34th anniversary, celebrating over three decades of political participation and describing the party as one of Ghana's most stable democratic institutions.

Speaking at the anniversary celebration, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, emphasized that governments and public institutions exist to serve the people.

He noted that the ultimate objective of democratic governance is to ensure that every citizen enjoys a dignified life and has their rights protected and respected.

Reflecting on Ghana's political history, Mr. Asiedu Nketia stated that during the final years of the revolutionary era, it became clear that the country needed to transition to constitutional rule. According to him, the shift to democratic governance brought stability and strengthened the nation's democratic institutions.

He explained that while internal factors played a role in the transition, there were also significant pressures from the international community and other stakeholders. As a result, the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) initiated the process that led to the establishment of constitutional governance, laying the foundation for Ghana's Fourth Republic and its democratic development.

In addition, the Member of Parliament for the Klottey Korle Constituency, Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, addressed party members during the NDC's 34th anniversary celebration, emphasizing the importance of balancing citizens' rights with their responsibilities in a democratic society.

She noted that while the ultimate objective of democratic governance is to ensure that every citizen enjoys a dignified existence and has their rights respected, citizens must also recognize their duty to uphold and protect the democratic process.

Reflecting on the history of the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings recalled a message delivered by the party's founder and former President, the late Jerry John Rawlings, at a major rally in Cape Coast ahead of the 2016 general elections. According to her, Rawlings urged party supporters to remain faithful to the principles and values of the NDC rather than imitate the practices of other political parties.

She stressed that principles and values should never be compromised for political advantage, adding that a firm commitment to these ideals helps safeguard democratic processes from manipulation and undue influence.

Dr. Zanetor Rawlings further cautioned that poverty can leave citizens vulnerable to short-term inducements and instant gratification, which can weaken democratic participation. She therefore called on the NDC government to prioritize equitable access to opportunities and the fair distribution of national resources to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.

She also urged public office holders to demonstrate humility in leadership, emphasizing that positions of authority are opportunities to serve rather than to wield power.

The MP encouraged party members and government officials to uphold the values of integrity, service, and accountability as the NDC continues its mission of promoting social justice, democratic governance, and national development.

The celebration brought together party executives, members, and supporters to reflect on the NDC's journey, achievements, and contributions to Ghana's democratic growth over the past 34 years.
