Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has confirmed that Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong was arrested and detained in Amsterdam, telling Parliament today that the House is working with government to ensure “justice is done.”

Addressing MPs as the second meeting of the second session opened, Bagbin described the development as “regrettable” and pledged to keep the House updated.

Case before the House

“As you’ve been told it’s regrettable that one of the members of this House is alleged to be on the wrong side of the law,” Bagbin said. He identified the member as Hon Ohene Kwame Frimpong, MP for Asante Akyem North

“You’ve already been given the details,” he added. “What I can add is that Parliament is working with government to ensure justice is done in this matter.

The Speaker said he would brief MPs as the case progresses. “I will in due course keep the House updated with developments in the matter,” he told the chamber.

Bagbin conveyed the House’s empathy to those affected. “Permit me on your behalf to convey the empathy of the House to members of his family and his constituents for this unfortunate development,” he said.

He urged them to “exercise strength” and assured them of Parliament’s support. “We are with them and we are doing everything to make sure that he is accorded all the due respect, dignity and the opportunities available to all of us in international law.”

The Speaker said MPs had already received “voluminous information” on steps taken by the Foreign Affairs Ministry. “I’m happy that voluminous information has been given you as to the steps that have been taken by the Minister of Foreign Affairs together with our mission in Holland,” Bagbin noted

He cautioned members against interference. “So please keep your call and leave those who are involved.”
