The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is set to roll out its nationwide patient support programme in June 2026 as part of efforts to improve access to specialised healthcare and provide financial relief for vulnerable Ghanaians.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, the Administrator of the Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, said the initiative is aimed at promoting equitable and compassionate healthcare delivery across the country.

Sighted at the official Facebook page of Jubilee House, the Fund is designed to complement the work of the National Health Insurance Authority by supporting patients who require specialised medical care.

Mrs. Darko-Opoku explained that the Fund is financed through multiple sources, including allocations from the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), government support, grants, investments and voluntary contributions.

She disclosed that the nationwide rollout follows a successful pilot phase which tested patient onboarding, treatment monitoring and claims management systems.

The Administrator further revealed that the Trust Fund has partnered with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons as well as nursing and pharmacy training institutions to decentralise specialist training across the country.

The partnerships, she noted, are intended to equip more healthcare professionals in specialised fields such as oncology, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology and neurology.

As part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery, the Fund has also distributed critical medical equipment, including dialysis machines, ICU beds and patient monitors, to selected health facilities nationwide.

The initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to improve healthcare access and build a stronger healthcare system capable of addressing specialised medical needs across Ghana.
