The Africa Governance Centre (AGC), a prominent organization focused on enhancing governance across the continent, has officially congratulated Dr. Fateh Boutbig on his recent election as President of the Pan-African Parliament for the upcoming 2026–2029 term, a position that holds considerable influence and responsibility within the landscape of African governance.
In a statement issued in Accra, the Centre expressed its belief that Dr. Boutbig’s election represents a remarkably significant development for the ongoing evolution of continental governance, as well as for the legislative coordination that operates within the framework of the African Union.

The AGC emphasized the importance of strong leadership at this level, suggesting that it might spur a renewed commitment to collaboration among member states in addressing shared challenges.

Dr. Boutbig, who is not only a reputable member of the Council of the Nation representing the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria but also has a wealth of experience in various capacities of legislative and political leadership, is well poised for this role. His previous tenure within the Pan-African Parliament has equipped him with invaluable insights and understanding of regional dynamics, and his current leadership of the Future Front Party in Algeria underlines his influence and commitment to progressive political engagement.

According to the AGC, the Pan-African Parliament remains a pivotal institution within the overall African Union system, tasked with essential responsibilities that encompass legislative coordination, governance oversight, and maintaining institutional alignment across the diverse member states that comprise the Union.

The Centre poignantly noted that the credibility and efficacy of the Parliament are intricately linked with the robustness of national political systems, as well as the capacity of continental bodies to translate shared priorities into actionable and effective outcomes for the people of Africa.

Furthermore, the AGC underscored that the seamless conduct of the elections serves as a testament to the collective commitment of member states towards maintaining established institutional procedures and ensuring representative governance within the framework of the African Union.

This adherence to democratic processes is crucial in bolstering the legitimacy and authority of continental governance structures.

The Centre also recognized Dr. Boutbig’s notable contributions to the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI), highlighting his active involvement in the processes surrounding the African Political Parties Summit. The AGC noted that his dedicated work has significantly supported initiatives aimed at enhancing the role of political parties in governance systems, fostering meaningful policy formulation, and contributing to the long-term national development across the continent.

This engagement directly addresses a persistent gap that has been observed in many African states, where the disconnection between political processes and governance outcomes has historically hampered the effectiveness of institutions, the statement importantly noted, reflecting on the challenges faced in achieving effective governance.

In its observations, the AGC concluded that Dr. Boutbig’s election not only marks a pivotal moment in leadership but also signals a broader shift toward fostering stronger collaboration between political leadership and legislative authority at both the national and continental levels. This shift could potentially lead to more integrated and cohesive governance structures within Africa.

In expressing confidence in his capabilities, the AGC articulated its belief that Dr. Boutbig will adeptly lead the Pan-African Parliament, advancing its crucial role in fostering enhanced coordination among member states while promoting consistent governance practices that resonate across the diverse landscapes of the African continent.
