General Secretary for the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua, has taken a decisive stand on behalf of his political party, sending a robust message to the current government regarding the essential right to free speech and the troubling culture of silence that seems to have emerged.
During a recent address that resonated with party supporters and citizens alike, he articulated concerns that have been widely shared in the political discourse, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an open dialogue in a democratic society.
In his remarks, he pointed fingers at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, which is led by President John Dramani Mahama, asserting that its actions can be characterized as unlawful and a significant deviation from the principles of governance established under the rule of law.
He stressed that the nation must adhere to these fundamental legal frameworks, reminding the audience of past political statements made by members of the opposition, particularly some comments regarding former President Nana Akufo-Addo's commitment to upholding these essential democratic principles.
Through this declaration,Mr Kodua aimed to rally support around the significance of safeguarding the rights of citizens to speak freely without fear of retribution while calling for greater accountability from the sitting government.
Lawyer Kodua brought to light several instances involving members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have reportedly been arrested and detained by the current sitting government, despite the glaring absence of any substantial legal justification or evidence against them.
He argued that these actions not only violate fundamental rights but also serve to instill a sense of fear and panic within the broader community, creating an atmosphere of intimidation that undermines democratic principles.
He appeal to the media, he charged them with the responsibility to speak out against such injustices, emphasizing the crucial role they play in holding authorities accountable.
He also expressed a fervent hope that in the impending year of 2029, if the political landscape should shift and similar tactics were employed against members of the current government, the media would not remain silent or complicit in the unfolding drama, as they cannot afford to be muted now in the face of such alarming events.
