Gideon Cheremeh Amoah, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team in Bono Region, has cast doubt on the effectiveness of Ghana’s upcoming SIM card re-registration exercise in curbing fraudulent activities.
Speaking on Sompa FM-Sunyani, Thursday edition of ‘Ghana Nkomo’, with Akua Nyarko Abronoma, Mr. Amoah argued that while the policy is well-intentioned, it may not significantly reduce mobile money-related fraud due to widespread misuse of identification by well-meaning individuals.
“The re-registration of SIM cards will not stop fraudulent transactions. We’re suffering not because of the bad ones but because of the good ones,” he stated.
According to him, many Ghanaians, out of sympathy or a desire to help, allow multiple individuals to register SIM cards using their Ghana Cards.
He explained that in some cases, a single person may permit more than ten others to use their identification details for SIM registration.
“This tells us that it’s not necessarily the bad ones causing damage to the system, but rather the good people who unintentionally create loopholes by assisting friends, family, and acquaintances,” Amoah added.
His comments highlight growing concerns about the human factor undermining regulatory efforts aimed at sanitizing the telecommunications sector.
The SIM re-registration exercise, introduced to enhance national security and combat fraud, requires all mobile subscribers to link their SIM cards to the Ghana Card.
However, Mr. Amoah insists that without behavioral change and stricter enforcement mechanisms, the exercise may fall short of its intended objectives.
