President John Dramani Mahama has broken ground for the construction of a 24-hour economy model market at Dormaa Ahenkro, marking a key step in the government’s plan to expand round-the-clock economic activity nationwide.

Mahama said the initiative would be rolled out across all 261 districts, with each market designed to operate continuously and provide essential services to support traders and local communities.

“These markets will not just be places of trade but centres of economic activity, equipped with banking services, cold storage facilities, daycare centres, and security and emergency services,” he said.

The President added that the facilities would also include police and fire posts as well as clinics, aimed at improving safety, convenience and productivity for market users.

During the visit, Mahama also inspected progress on major road projects, including the Jinijini–Sampa corridor and the Sunyani Outer Ring Road, both seen as critical to improving transport and boosting regional trade.

He said recent macroeconomic indicators showed significant improvement, citing a drop in inflation from 23.4% to 3.3% and an appreciation of the Ghana Cedi from around GH¢16–GH¢17 to about GH¢10.70 against the US dollar.

Mahama stressed that maintaining these gains would be essential to safeguarding the economy against future external shocks, adding that continued investment in infrastructure and local enterprise would play a key role in sustaining growth.
