Former Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, Kwasi Ameyaw Cheremeh, has strongly disagreed with comments made by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng describing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “fake,” arguing that such remarks undermine the integrity of the party and its members.
According to him, NPP members voted to elect the party’s leaders, and as a member himself, Professor Frimpong-Boateng cannot distance himself from that process.
Speaking on the matter in an interview with Ama Konadu on ‘Adea Akye Abia’ morning show at Sompa Fm-Sunyani, Mr. Cheremeh said Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s assertion that the party and its leaders are “fake” is unfounded and raises questions about his own position within the NPP.
“I disagree with Professor Frimpong-Boateng. When you say the party is fake and the leaders within it are also fake, then you don’t deserve to be a member of the party. If not, then you are also fake,” Mr. Cheremeh stated.
He emphasized that the NPP’s leadership structure from national executives to regional and constituency executives was democratically elected by party members across the country.
“The leaders in the party include the national executives, regional executives and constituency executives who were all voted for by members. It is NPP members who elected them,” he said. “So if the NPP members voted to elect these leaders and you are also a member, then it means you are equally part of that process.”
Mr. Cheremeh also referenced interviews granted by Prof. Frimpong-Boateng to various media outlets, noting that the former minister had reportedly indicated he did not vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 general elections.
“I watched most of his interviews, and when he was asked whether he voted for Bawumia in the 2024 general elections, he said no. This tells you his mindset,” Mr. Cheremeh remarked.
The former MP further suggested that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s criticisms may be rooted in personal dissatisfaction following his exclusion from government appointments during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s second term.
“In the first four years under Akufo-Addo, you had an appointment. But since you were not given an appointment in the second four years, now you are bitter,” he alleged.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, a former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, has recently made critical comments about the NPP, sparking debate within the party and among political observers.
The exchange adds to ongoing internal discussions within the NPP as the party navigates post-election reflections and debates about its future direction.
