President John Dramani Mahama has promised that all 16 regions will benefit from his government’s flagship infrastructure initiative, the Big Push programme.
Speaking at the launch at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region, on Tuesday, Mahama said the scheme was designed to modernise Ghana’s road network, boost inter-regional connectivity and open new economic opportunities.
“From January 7, we have been designing road projects across the length and breadth of the country. The Big Push touches all 16 regions. Every region is going to benefit from its share of the programme,” he said.
The president explained that the first phase of the plan would focus on roads linking regional capitals to make travel easier and foster national unity. The second phase would prioritise roads between district capitals.
“We have 261 districts in Ghana, and we believe neighbouring districts should have good roads connecting their capitals,” he added.
Mr Mahama also highlighted the importance of roads in food-producing areas and industrial zones, saying these had been carefully identified and integrated into the project.
The government says the programme will lay the foundation for long-term economic transformation.
