The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) has on Thursday, 29th January, 2026, carried out a massive decongestion exercise at major market centres within the metropolis as part of efforts to improve traffic flow, ensure public safety, and promote orderly trading.
The exercise, which focused on traders operating along road lanes and pedestrian walkways, aimed at clearing obstructions that pose risk to both motorists and pedestrians, thanks to the help of the Kotokuraba Police and Fire Command and the Metro NADMO Directorate, along with City Guard officers and Community Police officials from the Kotokuraba Police Command.
Markets centres which witnessed the decongestion exercise included the metropolis major market centres, being the Kotokuraba and Abura Market centres.
Mr. Asuma Braimah, the Coordinating Director for CCMA in an engagement with the media explained that the decongestion was necessary to reduce congestion, prevent accidents, and enhance sanitation at the market areas.
He emphasized that the action was not intended to punish traders but to restore order and enforce city by-laws.
The CCMA Coordinating Director also assured traders of the Assembly's commitment to working with market leaders to identify suitable trading areas to boost their income.
Report available to Sompa TV's Eric Annan indicates that traders were earlier sensitized and given notice to relocate to designated market spaces before the exercise commenced.
Residents and motorists have welcomed the move, describing it as a step toward making Cape Coast a safer and more organized city.
