The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Police Service have jointly begun coordinated security operations across the Ashanti, Volta, and Ahafo Regions to apprehend suspects linked to recent assaults on security officers and members of anti-illegal mining task forces.

A statement from the GAF’s Department of Public Relations said the dawn operations, which commenced on Wednesday, focused on identified hotspots including Dadwen and Anwona in the Ashanti Region, Ehi in the Volta Region, and Hwediem, Kenyase, Guaso, and Marhani in the Ahafo Region.

The military described the exercise as an intelligence-led effort aimed at arresting those responsible for attacks on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), police officers, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials, and some journalists.

Security authorities cautioned that any individuals or groups attempting to obstruct these lawful operations will be dealt with decisively.

“Anyone who interferes with the duties of the security services, particularly during anti-galamsey activities, will face the full rigour of the law,” the statement warned.

Assuring residents of their safety, the Armed Forces and Police encouraged the public to remain calm as the operations continue.

“Adequate measures have been implemented to ensure the protection of law-abiding citizens in all affected areas,” the statement added.

The release also expressed gratitude to civil society organizations, the media, and members of the public for their continued support in the national effort to curb illegal mining.

The statement was signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces.
