Market women at Bechem Central Market in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo Region have appealed to the government to renovate and improve the poor condition of the market structures.

During a visit to the central market at Bechem, the capital of the municipality, the traders told Sompa FM market survey that the state of the market was very deplorable and unsanitary due to lack of toilets and washrooms.

The market women expressed worry that they could not cope during the rains due to the leakages from the roofing, adding that poor lighting was also contributing to rising incidents of burglary and petty thefts.

Madam Adwoa Amponsah, the tomato queen at the central market said the appalling situation had slowed down buying and selling, affecting their sales and profits, and appealed to the Municipal Assembly to provide them with toilets and washrooms.

Another trader only known as Afia, said because of the present poor sales, the businesses of most of the women engaged in the sale of perishable food were gradually collapsing, saying their stuff often rot.

She said many of the market structures were very bad which needed renovation, saying the facility also required dustbins and waste containers for improved waste management and sanitation.
