Education under open skies: Techiman school’s plea to rebuild storm-hit classroom

Dozens of Kindergarten pupils at Zongo M/A School in Techiman, the Bono east regional capital are braving rain and sun to learn in a roofless classroom after a violent storm ripped off the roof last week. With the rainy season intensifying, community leaders and distraught learners are sounding the alarm, urging immediate intervention to salvage the children’s education.

Last week’s downpour and fierce winds tore through the school’s KG block, leaving young learners exposed. Pupils now scramble to shield their books during sudden rains and  endure scorching heat during instructional hours.

The Chief of Dagomba Line, under whose jurisdiction the school is located, Nana Yakubu Adam, lamented about problems in the school and said, they are becoming one too many.

 He said, the situation is  “unacceptable” and therefore, called on stakeholders to come to the school’s aid. “These children are Ghana’s future. How can they learn like this?” he said, urging NGOs, government agencies, and public-spirited individuals to donate roofing sheets, nails, cements, and other materials to rebuild the classroom.

Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for Dagomba line electoral area, Yahaya Adam confirmed the situation to Gaskiya fm's Abena Konadu Yiadom and said he has forwarded the situation to the Techiman Metropolitan assembly for urgent redress. He added that,regional office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been informed and hoped that, the situation is given the needed attention.

Finally, the affected pupils who sit in the roofless classrom, told us how the situation is affecting their academics, and called on authorities to fix the problem for them.
