The Government of Ghana has condemned what it described as an “unprovoked” Israeli attack on the State of Qatar, which has resulted in casualties, destruction of property, and heightened regional tensions.

In a statement issued in Accra on Wednesday (10 September), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the airstrikes were a “clear violation of international law and an affront to the sovereignty of the State of Qatar.” The statement warned that the attack undermines ongoing efforts to achieve peace between Israel and Palestine.

President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the people of Ghana, expressed solidarity with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the people of Qatar “in these difficult times.”

The government commended Qatar for what it called a “tireless and impressive commitment” to advancing negotiations aimed at resolving the long-running conflict between Israel and Palestine. It further urged that the latest incident should not derail Qatar’s diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful settlement.

“The Government of Ghana appeals that this condemnable incident is not allowed to derail Qatar’s effort in negotiating a peaceful diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” the statement read.

The ministry called on all parties to exercise restraint and recommit to dialogue as the only viable path to sustainable peace in the Middle East.
